FYM JAM OF THE DAY: WEEZY F. BABY AKA BIRDMAN JR. 'I AM NOT A HUMAN BEING'

A man of many names: lil Wayne, Weezy F. Baby, Birdman Jr. or just Wayne (if you're nasty), dropped (on iTunes) his latest jaunt into the hip-hop solar system on his 27th birthday (from prison) this past September. The title track 'I Am Not A Human Being' happens to be FYM's Jam of the Day this week.

The video above features an alien-eyed neon drippin' "greatest rapper of all time" Wayne, blending his untouchable (in today's game) hip-hop lyricism, with crunching 808 guitar samples, amicable to sounds of 80's hip-hop past.

I Am Not A Human Being, Wayne's 8th studio album comes during a time as he paces in a state of solitary confinement (during his 9th stint in prison) at Rikers Island. The album itself seems to be lacking the depth of 2008 masterpiece Carter 3, but it's still better than anything else released in hip-hop this 2010. Drake also makes several cameos on this album, contributing more here, than he did on his own release this year (which we are still not thanking him for). Weezy is scheduled to be let out of prison this November, where an unparalleled celebration of freedom, weed, and prescription cough syrup will be on display in honor of his release.

FYM REWIND: GIRL TALK, CAN YOU SAY CHI-CITY!

FYM's publicist- Nick 'the spruce goose' Codling found this insightful behind the scenes look into Gregg Gillis (Girl Talk) and his massive showdown on New Year's Eve at the Congress Theatre in Chicago. Of course this creative commons master released (9.21.10) it as a freebie online! The doc itself runs an easy 30 minutes, and worth the time if you pick up what this cat throws down. (Bonus Feature: Black Sabbath "War Pigs" remix)

Cheers, FYM.

FYM ON THE LIST: ZION_I CREW

MC Zumbi (Zion-I Crew) and friends put on an incredible live show Saturday night at Chop Suey, Seattle.

Spontaneous green pastures of lyrical mastery flowed through MC Zumbi, as he challenged Seattle's Macklemore to a friendly 10min+ battle in front of an energetic group of fans.

Macklemore, (who hosted the night) held his own publicly displaying his verbal talents as he went three rounds with Zumbi.

With encouragement from MC Zumbi, and the party ready passionate crowd, Amplive even came up front to wirelessly stun the crowd, free-styling 808-beats, that would sound ahead of their time in the year 2020.

The Zion-I Crew launched their musical spaceship amping up the crowd with FYM's favorite Coastin'.

FYM's Art Director J. Codling recently designed two t-shirts for Zion-I (freelancing for Yonas Media in San Francisco) which are now in print, and available for purchase online. FYM can definitely relate to the message found on the t-shirt, and in the song.

It was truly a pleasure to witness Bay Area Hip-Hop legends perform with so much energy in such an intimate venue. A sea of bobbing hands could be viewed from stage, with dancing fans grooving to Zion-I Crew's arsenal of dynamic, space-age, sonic chemistry. (Special shout out to Ryan Lewis and Friends for kicking off the night right)

Look for Zion-I to release their new record Atomic Clock (stoked) this November 2010. The guys are also currently working with The Grouch on new material due out March 2011.

But until then, check out the latest joint featuring Zion-I and The Grouch on the Step Up 3-D soundtrack!

FYM CRAFT BREW: THE GREAT AMERICAN BREWDOG

(Editors Note: FYM's Boston Beer Connoisseur, Jeff "BrewDaddy" Preussner, is this weeks guest contributor.)

I am so glad my first beer review for FYM is Dogfish Head 90-minute. Not only is there a lot to talk about, but it's probably my favorite beer of all time (FYM AGREES), so lets just start with the facts.

Dogfish Head 90-Minute
Classification: Imperial IPA
IBUs: 90!!!
ABV: 9.0

Similar Brews:
Avery Brewing Co: Maharaja
Green Flash:  Imp IPA
Southern Tier: Unearthly

So what does this all mean? 90-minute is a continuously hopped Imperial IPA, meaning that for a whole 90 minutes the wort is boiling hops continuously, and then dry hopped after cooling to ensure a flavor that is not too bitter. It has a deep amber color to it (I'm guessing about 8-10 SRM). If  you drink it out of a snifter (preferred) you can smell the fusion of hops + malt and REALLY appreciate the work that went into this particular IPA.

The flavor is something that I feel truly sets the 90 apart from other Imp IPAs that I have tasted and brewed. The flavor hits you all at once and is gone a second later (and they're usually quite bitter). Because of the continuous hop additions, and the perfect hop to malt ratio, the 90-Minute flavor tastes the same from beginning to end. A very smooth yet strong hoppiness balanced perfectly by the presence of lots of malt a perfect mixture of bitterness, flavor, and aroma.

At almost $12.00 for a 4 pack the prices are steep but it is worth it (higher alcohol content too)! Give this beer a shot! We guarantee, you will not be disappointed.

The 90-minute was the first in Dogfish Head's family of continuously hopped feats of BEERDOM (freeing America from the chains of pissy-cheap beer). They also offer, the 60-minute which is a bit lighter but with the same well-balanced mixture of hop and malt. The 75 minute, a bit harder to find, cask conditioned mixture of the 60 and the 90 and the 120 minute that is boiled for a full 2 hours. I find it a bit too crazy for my taste buds, but I have never let it sit for the recommended 10 years it takes the flavors to mature…

90-minute is the perfect end to the work day. Drink one, or in my case two. Regardless, pick up a couple four-packs, and enjoy the Best Brew in America with friends.

Cheers!

FYM INSPIRATION: AARON VAN LIEU

A few weeks back, FYM's publicist was in Seattle paying his Art Director a visit, when he introduced me to an incredibly talented inspiration of a human being. Aaron Van Lieu. (hit us up to get in contact with him)

Art is always a touchy subject to talk about. But this kid is for REAL. Which is abundantly clear in his artist statement. He represents the best parts of being alive. He is a perfect example of when you create something for yourself, doing it on your own, beautiful things can come about.

Selections:

We also asked Aaron to give us a few words to share with the public (since this is the first time his work has ever been covered) Here is what he had to say:

I'm California born and bred so I feel that has a lot to do with my style. I was definitely influenced by what Northern California had to offer me and I took full advantage of it. Growing up, I was immediately attracted to being outdoors and observing the motion and patterns of the native wildlife (including the people who lived around me). The interaction of people and wildlife is something I always respected, and wanted for myself. It's nice to have a harmony. So I reflect that in a lot that I do.

Both of my parents (one a mushoom hunter from Michigan, the other a seamstress from South Korea) encouraged my brother and I to work on our passion for art from a very young age.

I have never had any formal training for drawing, It's just something that I always did to pass the time for fun or as a form of meditation. I never attended a formal "Academy o'Fart" school or even took art classes for that matter. My technique is all my own without any outside influence from others (constructive criticism and non constructive alike).

To me, creating is just going with the flow of my natural biorhythm. Some days I pump out piece after piece, months on end. Then on some, I just sit in bed and eat greasy ass cheeseburgers and watch. But after every lull in my work I come back more aggressive. My apatite for ink and pencil, more insatiable. As cliché as it sounds, it's like being born again. I challenge myself. I push the limits of my power of observation and my gift of a steady hand to do something greater. Something I've never done before.

Yes, today IS a great day for a Cheeseburger, but no. Sir, I think I'll have the Baby du Jour instead (no tomatoes).

best,
aaron

TRACY BONHAM: FYM BURN HIGH HER FIRES

Masts of Manhatta Sounds Like: nervous nights and dirty daydreams, energy dynamics surpassing anything in contemporary pop music, stories of devilish joy and discovery, on two sides of town.. focusing in learning experiences.

We are happy to say Masts of Manhatta, Tracy Bonham's new album, was just brought to FYM's listening table. Let go of the rock, and float down stream, as Tracy Bonham furnishes musical vineyards with lush textures, track by track, floating in a river of storied souls. This album is stripped down, loose, yet polished with a clean coat of vocal Bonham bliss.

This could indeed be... Bonham's best work yet! Where one track ends, another story begins, taking the listener on an emotional journey through multiple layers of musical instrument prowess.

There is no label pressure coming through the speakers while listening to Masts of Manhatta. The music feels sincere and organic, like this is coming from her (and not the higher-ups type of sound). Which means this album is a freeing experience, that can be listened to multiple-times. (discovering new textures with each listen)

Masts has perfect moments of peppering in the 90's forgotten, despondently hopeful chorus sound. (As found in You're My Is-ness) Bonham is rolling through Seattle soon. You will find FYM singing along to the new Masts of Manhatta (particularly Devil's Got Your Boyfriend, and Big Red Heart) jams at the Sunset Tavern, September 9th 2010, Seattle Washington USA. We suggest you do the same.

Cheers.
