FYM PRESS PLAY: FREE ENERGY- SUMMER 2011

Have you been searching for something to rip through those speakers while driving around working on your left-arm tan? FYM's sonic remedy: revisit Free Energy. The Philly-based broadcasters of hope carry the spirit of summer throughout their 2010 release Stuck on Nothing.

Over the winter (as pictured above), FYM had the pleasure of seeing these dudes live the past two times they've played Seattle's landmark venue- The Crocodile. And this July, Free Energy are on the road again, kicking off their Summer 2011 Tour! It's a pretty special trip considering the band will be playing stops on the Tour de Fat (New Belgium Brewing 'trade your car in for a bike') national cycling festival.

In other tour news, Weezer just announced that they will be hosting a 4 day rock concert cruise (from Miami to Cozumel) next January 19-23. And Weezer is bringing a few friends along like: FREE ENERGY, Ozma, Dinosaur Jr, Wavves, and The Antlers (just to name a few). View the video posted above for more details!

Today, Free Energy also released an image of their latest summer tour merch. Coming from a designer's perspective, the bold typography examines the band as a moniker, paired with the school's out for summer freedom that only a summer-tank can deliver. Want more Free Energy? Visit their website HERE for more information. Cheers, FYM.

FYM PREVIEW: FREE ENERGY LIVE AT THE CROCODILE 1.25.11, W/ THE POSTELLES

It's no secret we DIG Free Energy. The seemingly endless tour support for Stuck On Nothing (DFA Records Debut) yet again, brings them back to Seattle tomorrow evening at The Crocodile.

(Photo above from our last live journey with Free Energy)

Free Energy are doing something special (they have fun, and entertain their audience)... With peerless vintage rockers, fan interaction, and a 'play like we actually enjoy what we are doing' attitude, Free Energy are a must see live!

(Photos/Graphics By: Jesse Codling)

For FYM, Free Energy has become the quintessential American rock n' roll band. We have been fans since Hockey Night (this Art Director even photographed their daytrotter session from waaay back in the day click here) After a series of December dates in support of Weezer (on their Memories tour). The sonic champs from Philly are coming to Seattle again, this time with The Postelles. Check out what both of these bands are all about below:

We look forward to the inevitable party, taking place tomorrow evening. and hope to see you all at The Crocodile (8pm). Buy tickets Here!

Cheers,

FYM

FYM ON THE LIST: FREE ENERGY, HOLLERADO, LIVE IN SEATTLE ROCK CITY

Bouncy duel Thin-Lizzy guitar riffs, mixed with the effervescence of a 70's video arcade, Free Energy fired away on the loose Seattle scene.

Their music is a rare-breed of fist-pumping schools out for summer glorification. They are timely thoughtful scholars of vintage sound, bringing some much needed buoyancy to this drizzly grey town.

Leader of the pack, Paul Sprangers is the embodiment of what an irreproachable frontman should be. Something we haven't seen by a lead since witnessing Willie Nelson's crowd working skills. Sprangers continually pointed out audience members, making superior connections with the crowd. He even handed this art director the microphone (awesome) to help finish out a tune.

Free Energy pumped out every jam possible off their indisputable classic Stuck on Nothing. They brought the party to Seattle on this evening, with mounds of confetti, and guest appearances with tour-mates Hollerado.

We left their set inexplicably stunned with good vibes and smiles on our faces.

But let us not forget the openers Hollerado, who truly matched if not bettered Free Energy's performance.

Canada seems to be unstoppable in the export of amazing rock n' roll bands. Hollerado's Nixon and Menno battled each other in an awesome display of rock perfection.

The lead singer even found a way around the no alcohol on-stage rule in Seattle, by building a massive straw, and drinking out of fans cups!

Free Energy and Hollerado together, were a rare look at bands on tour actually enjoying themselves (not just a day job), bringing live music back to focus, with true fan interaction and endless entertainment.

Hollerado's drummer (pictured above on the right, singing back-up vocals for Free Energy) has to be called out for his intense sense of timing, and truly masterful skills at his craft. And the same can be said for Free Energy's rhythm section.

These dudes played their hearts out and produced an unforgettable evening for our crew. After seeing these two bands together, one wonders how insane it would have been seeing the original tour line-up with Foxy Shazam (who canceled this leg of the tour due to the lead singers eye being poked out).

Regardless, the evening was magical (and so was the venue). We leave you with a few bonus photos (taken by J Codling), because the party was too good not to show everything!

Cheers, FYM.

FYM PREVIEW: FREE ENERGY LIVE IN SEATTLE

Free Energy play The Crocodile this Thursday November 11th in Seattle Washington USA. The band ran into some recent good fortune, announcing they will be serving as opening act for Weezer during their Memories tour! For more info on those dates click HERE.

If you haven't heard Free Energy, check out their DFA debut, Stuck on Nothing. The buzzy self-titled track Free Energy, creates a kinetic force of vintage spirit.

Free Energy will play the second leg of this tour minus Foxy Shazam. Lead singer Eric Nally, stated on on his band's facebook, "I recently poked my eye out in the U.K. section of this tour, I had to go to the hospital, I can't see out of my right eye it really sucks, and it's really scary for me."

We hope wild-man Nally gets better soon! But forYoungModerns are still stoked for this Thursday! So charge up, and come down to The Crocodile 11.11.10 in Seattle Washington USA. This may be one of the last chances for Free Energy fans to see the band play in such an intimate venue!

Cheers,

FYM.

FREE ENERGY: BROADCASTING HOPE FOR DAYDREAM BELIEVERS

Free Energy have a new album out called Stuck on Nothing. From the get-go hardcore cowbell rhythms, and dueling (thin lizzy) guitars lay the ground work for an unforgettable refreshing taste of dazzling musical contemplation.

FYM publicist Nick Codling caught these guys at SXSW in Austin earlier this year. We were lucky enough to get our hands on a CASSETTE tape version of Stuck on Nothing! We are definitely impressed with tape nostalgia, and are happy to see Free Energy keeping the non-digital way of sharing music alive!

Free Energy pick up where their previous band Hockey Night left us. Providing thoughtful vintage rockers, prefect for hand claps, broadcasting hope through our speakers. Just as the album is titled, you will find no hang-ups on this release. Free Energy explore perfecting the art of a chant driven chorus, sure to bode well live.

Even in the darkest most stressful times, this album will lift your spirits, making you feel as cool as a 16 year old cutting class to smoke one with his buddies. Orchestral flair can be found peppered throughout the album, and on songs like All I Know.

But good production and sound can only take bands so far. Lyrically Stuck on Nothing is a gem! Irreverence, the rallying of rebellion, and hope are all woven into this record.

Standout Hockey Night revamp Psychic Lightning ends on this note:
"Can you remember how you lived before?
Was there a time in your life without a war?
Do you ever think that there might be something more?

You know they're coming alive tonight,
Yeah, they've been preparing and they're ready to fight
The sky is electric, my skin don't feel right
But either way it's going to end all right, well alright!"

The Free Energy crew will be providing positive psych-rockers at the Tractor Tavern September 12th 2010, in Seattle Washington USA. FYM is stoked to see these guys live, and will be covering all things Free Energy throughout the evening!

Band: Free Energy

Album: Stuck on Nothing

Sounds Like: the broadcasting of hope to daydream believers, who stand for burning down the gates of sonic negativity.

FYM: WORDS TO LIVE BY

Free Energy has been on our radar for a long time (since Hockey Night). We are constantly impressed with the scope of their music, and ability to harness this uniquely original, positive sound. FYM: Words to Live By,  is a feature we like to do, when music compels us to point out great lyricism!

Free Energy will undoubtedly be rockin' Hope Child at the Tractor Tavern in Seattle Washington USA, September 12, 2010. We hope to see you there.

FYM ON THE LIST: FREE ENERGY, MATES OF STATE

Free Energy played Bang Pop, Something in Common, All I Know, Hope Child, and their self titled track Free Energy. Watching Free Energy, you almost wonder if they were characters in That 70's Show. One would assume they spent all day on Haight Street shopping their life away. By the end of their set, I'm pretty sure that the lead singer gave a point out to everyone in the crowd. During the whole set you can't help but think that their drummer's inspiration is Animal from The Muppet Show.

Mates of State closed out the night and has been known as a duo had 2 extra members playing guitar and trumpet. If it weren't for Mates of State, it makes us wonder if Matt and Kim would exist today. Their harmonies that go back and forth are a treat to watch live. They have been a couple for over 10 years, but on stage is looks as though they're fresh as ever. Kori's endless keyboard melodies along with Jason's drumming is so simple and perfect that it makes one wonder if they should even have added extra members to their live show. The simplicity is what makes this band so great. Another great evening at Great American Music Hall and a screen printed tour only poster was snagged for the way home.

MATES OF STATE & FREE ENERGY

Mates of State and Free Energy are coming to San Francisco for 2 dates starting tomorrow at Great American Music Hall. Mates of State are supporting their new album CRUSHES (The Covers Mixtape) which features covers by The Mars Volta, Tom Waits and Death Cab for Cutie. This is the cover they did of Daniel Johnston's "True Love Will Find You In The End".

Free Energy are opening the show and they came in the ashes of Hockey Night who used to be on Lookout! Records out of Minnesota and now 3 of the 5 members are in Free Energy and they moved out to Philadelphia. The boys are quite a live show and are moving up the ranks. Make sure to catch this show at this historic venue.
