FYM HQ: Art Director J Thomas Codling picks his favorite releases of 2011. The following list represents the bands and tunes that inspired his afternoons, haunted his nights, and relentlessly rocked FYM's Seattle HQ speakers throughout the year. 1. Birdcloud: Birdcloud Raw, witty, balanced and beautiful. Nashville's Birdcloud is everything country music should be in 2011. Their self-titled release features instant classic's like Warshin My Big Ol Pussy, Bandit, and Do What I Want To (as seen below).



Makenzie Green and Jasmin Kaset's harmonious vocal connection will dominate your heart throughout this filthy 7-track barn burner. Their bold lyrics will undoubtedly offend those that need to be offended, while others (like us) find their frank honest take on the world to be well-crafted, punk as fuck, countrified brilliance.

2. Pickwick: Myths Pickwick took us by storm this year with their vibrant soulful sound. Myths may only be six songs, but start to finish -there isn't another collection of tunes we repeatedly listened to more of in 2011. With an instantly likeable vocal presence and sharp indie-soul charisma, frontman Galen Disston commands your attention as Pickwick's tight rhythm section makes your jaw drop to the floor.

3. Dawes: Nothing is Wrong 2011 also brought the triumphant sophomore release from Dawes, Nothing is Wrong comes doused full of sonic nostalgia featuring: prolific lyrical insight into the human-condition. This stunning album is a collection of 11 wise beyond their years West Coast narratives, focused in the art of embracing thoughtful melody. Listen to Coming Back to a Man below:

4. Dude York: Gangs of Dude York The first of three releases this year, recorded between the months of February-March 2011, Gangs of Dude York, is a formidable rock offering from a brand new Seattle band destined for big things. The album is an interesting mix of garage rock fury, dashed with vibrant vocals, engaging lyrics, harvesting an instantly appealing first release. What's really astounding about Dude York- is they've seemingly mastered from the get-go, uncanny musical wisdom balanced by an unforgiving vinatge arsenal of influences.

5. Das Dhoom: Poetry of Dhoom These Seattle world music mind-benders released a mindful, at times cinematic, adventure into the classic sound of India perfectly balanced with expansive bliss-filled digital landscapes. It's a 10-track journey into the mind of James Whetzel, who aside from being a classically trained sarod player, is also quite the music producer as heard in this fantastic new album.

This week Seattle's tremendous dark-horse garage pop trio -Dude York, released a new EP entitled Satanic Vs. (Album Cover Pictured Below)

Satanic Vs. -is a clever title, and could be taken multiple ways. One could read it as saying Dude York Satanic Verses (like in a song), or as a conceptual showdown (versus people) between dark forces and human beings -as each song title represents a different persons name, Track: 1. david 2. isabel 3. bryan 4. kerry.


Regardless, from start to finish Dude York's new 4-song EP is a thrilling ride full of catchy raw energy and intense passion. It's the type of music that makes your legs shake uncontrollably -leaving one feeling like they could take on the world, or paint a thousand pictures. It's truly inspiring stuff -and features well crafted production.

Satanic Vs. By Dude York is: fast, dark, honest, absurd, barely stays on the rails, hooky and hip garage (or basement) -rock n' roll. Lead singer & guitarist Peter Richards (pictured above) is tuned into his creative spirit, seemingly unafraid to push past fear and other philosophical artistic boundaries bred in life -this ultimately produces another incredible release, from a band we can't wait to hear more from.

FYM BUZZ: CONVERSATIONS WITH DUDE YORK- SEATTLE'S NEXT GREAT SONIC HOPE!

The Seattle music scene is a strange one. It's a fractured community consistently being overshadowed by labels, bands, and landmarks of the past. This city has been commodified and combed clean, time and time again, of any creative spirit that isn't willing to play the game, and crossover into the dark side of the empire. There are a LOT of 30-40 something musicians in this city not willing to let go of the 90's, their beer bellies, and drug habits, so they sit in sonic limbo- haunting dirty studios, playing heavy dark music, reminiscing over names and places that no longer exist.

And then there is Dude York, Seattle's next great sonic hope. Dude York is a band full of pure creative intrigue. Dispatching loose spontaneous passion, by way of their refreshing batch of sonic escapades, on their latest release Gangs of Dude York. See for yourself why FYM's Art Director has been going H.A.M. about this band over the past couple of weeks, when they play live this Tuesday June 14th, at the Comet Tavern in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle Washington.

Hanging on the Ave in Seattle's U-District, FYM sat down with the members of Dude York Thursday night, to try and discover who these guys were, and why they are so good. The long story short- Dude York is a group of friends who met in college, started a band, recorded a brilliant record in 3 weeks, already have enough material for another new record, who want to play live as much as possible, they believe in the elimination of genre and labels in music, a group who exudes joy and charming magnetism in person, and will win you over with their infectious new record Gangs of Dude York.

FYM PRESS PLAY: DUDE YORK, ZOMBIES

There's only been one record quenching our insatiable sonic hunger, buzzing through FYM's speakers over the past week, it's the first release from: Dude York, Gangs of Dude York.

Recorded between the months of February-March 2011, Gangs of Dude York, is a formidable rock offering from a brand new Seattle band destined for big things. The album is an interesting mix of 60-70's garage rock fury, dashed with vibrant vocals, thoughtful lyrics, harvesting an instantly appealing first release.

No band is typically this GOOD right out of the gate. What's really astounding about Dude York- is they've seemingly already done the hard part (that takes other groups years to accomplish) having mastered from the get-go, uncanny musical wisdom, balanced by an unforgiving nostalgic arsenal of influences.

Our favorite tune off the new record is song 3 (on this 11 track offering) called Zombies. From the start this jam grabs the listener with: unspoken yearning felt throughout a loose-riffy guitar showcase, care-free vocal ramblings, and a catchy melody. It's not everyday FYM gets to drop music knowledge about a tremendous new band before the rest of the world knows... so consider yourself warned Dude York LIVES!
