FYM ON THE LIST: OUTSIDE LANDS 2012 • DAY 1

You can't ask for a better setting than San Francisco's Golden Gate Park to showcase such an expansive offering of art°music°culture. Day one of Outside Lands 2012 played host to a bevy sonic opulence old and new.

Two Gallants started off our first day at Outside Lands 2012 on a positive note. FYM continues to be impressed with the passionate vocal power of frontman Adam Stephens. This duo based out of San Francisco, played cuts off their 2007 Saddle Creek self-titled gem, and debuted stellar tracks from their long overdue new record The Bloom and the Blight (ATO Records) due out in September.

Oakland California's Eric Ricky Reed Frederick has had an explosive level of success this year with his music project Wallpaper. The unabashed Bay Area party rocker proved his live show night-timing prowess works on a massive scale (even during the day). Rick Reed's on-stage connection with vocalist/hype woman Novena is an incredible treat to see live!

YACHT followed Wallpaper. on the Twin Peeks stage yesterday afternoon. Claire L. Evans is such a charismatic performer. Her sonic partnership with Jona Bechtolt and their tech-savvy mixture of cult°discothèque energy makes for an engaging show. What continually impresses FYM about YACHT is their sincere joy they bring to audiences live (truly looking like they LOVE what they do).

Up next we caught Reggie Watts surrounded by beer, wine, and food vendors being interviewed in the Outside Lands press tent. His comedic blend of soul and hip-hop is a true original.

Beck brought out the whole crew (including Smokey Hormel and Justin Meldal-Johnsen) for Outside Lands 2012. After growing up with his music for so many years, seeing Beck live for the first time was a true pleasure. Beck played popular selections from his 20+ year career, and dedicated Lost Cause off 2002's Sea Change to the memory of Adam Yauch.

It's been a while since FYM last saw the Foo Fighters live, we are so happy Pat Smear is back in the band, playing beside Dave Grohl. The Foo Fighters jacked-up radio hits, work perfectly in a large festival setting. You can't deny the history of this group, and the all-out performance Grohl gives every time he sets foot on stage.

We have never been rocked so hard in our lives... Neil Young may be in his mid-60's now, but he still can kick your ass playing guitar. His two hour set with Crazy Horse was on their terms, and they didn't play a full setlist of classic hits, as we are sure most would have liked to have seen.

Instead Young and company made a pack to show all the performers of the day what playing rock n' roll truly means. From the start Neil Young & Crazy Horse opened with a blistering 20-minute version of Love And Only Love. This lengthy theme of building up, and tearing down songs, continued throughout the set. One can only hope, Day two at Outside Lands will be as good this one. Cheers, FYM.

FYM SHORTLIST: TOP 5 ARTISTS & ALBUMS • 2011 PICKED BY OUR PUBLICIST • NICHOLAS DAVID

1. Washed Out: Within and Without This could be some of the most relaxing music put out all year. Georgia's own Ernest Greene, aka Washed Out had FYM mesmerized with this gem -Making a georgeous video to give you the visuals of his dreamy tunes sets the perfect tone.

2. Cut Copy: Zonoscope It would be next to impossible to listen to Zonoscope and not get a dance party going. Killing it live with their incredible light show was a definite highlight of our year for concerts. Cut Copy's Dan Whitford acts as a conductor at their shows and he'll convince you from the start. These Australians really know how to get it done.

3. M83: Hurry Up, We're Dreaming With a single so good as Midnight City it's tough to make it much further into this album without having this JAM stuck on repeat. But France's own M83 has filled a two for one album that will leave you hunting to find filler songs. With the brilliant collection of tunes on this record, it's no wonder they've been selling out shows across the entire world this year.
 

4. Wilco: The Whole Love It's been a while since Wilco has been on our radar... But from the start- their opening song Art of Almost, takes the listener on an incredibly well-rounded return to form. Rightfully so, The Whole Love has been nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Album.  Let's hope these Midwest hereos get their long overdue recognition!

5. Black Keys: El Camino We're not really sure when The Black Keys take a break, but it's a great problem for a fan to have. Their first single Lonely Boy makes FYM remember those long nights at dive bars in Tennessee drinking whiskey, and drity dancing with the local waitress. They've got plenty more ammunition up their sleeve with sweet slide guitar licks in Run Right Back. 2012 is going to be good to this Ohio duo.

FYM BONUS: NICK'S BEST EP PICKS

1. Wallpaper: #STUPiDFACEDD It's a surreal feeling to see a college friend show up on MTV while you're watching your favorite reality show Jersey Show (don't tell anyone, okay? --not necessarily all of FYM likes this show). Bay Area's own Wallpaper. has packed this EP with club/dorm/car banging hits, and some clever ass lyrics "I'm blacked out sleep walking, on a quest for god at my friend's apartment" that anyone can relate to during those late night, 3-day drunk marathons.

2. Lana Del Rey: Video Games Internet sensation, Lana Del Rey cock-teased us in 2011 with this two song EP (plus remixes). Featuring the pop-culturally beautiful Video Games, her smokin' vocals reel us in and we can't turn back. Get ready for her full-length album Born To Die due out on January 27th. Until then FYM will be building a shrine in her honor, and getting ready for those West Coast tour dates.

FYM PRESS PLAY: WALLPAPER. GETS WHiTEBOY WASTED IN NEW VIDEO #STUPiDFACEDD

FYM's go-to San Francisco nightlife sonic specialist Wallpaper. just released his latest video titled #STUPiDFACEDD. The tune itself is an instant club banger, dripping with filthy 808-rhythm focused ambience, and chopped & screwed witty one-liner vocal prowess. Wallpaper. seems to be hitting his stride in 2011, as his latest video is currently being featured on MTVU (the only channel worth watching in college dorms across the nation). We totally dig the subtle, yet extremely well-done visual effects featured in Wallpaper.'s latest cinematic offering. FYM's Publicist Nick 'got a new lion's den' Codling was on set during the filming, and can be seen perpetrating the party in #STUPiDFACEDD rockin' a spooky lion mask, see below:

It's not everyday FYM sees one of their own on MTV, let alone for such an important SF-based artist like Wallpaper.. that is why #STUPiDFACEDD is ushering us into the weekend as our 'WhiteBoy Wasted' Jam of the Day.

FYM IN THE SCENE: WALLPAPER, STUPiDFACEDD VIDEO SHOOT

(Editors Note: Last week FYM's Publicist Nick Codling played the role of an extra in a music video for Wallpaper's latest single, STUPiDFACEDD, this is what he had to say about it. Enjoy!)

When people think of being in a music video, we're pretty sure they think it's just pure glamour (and it is, kinda).  Well, if Papalote Burritos, PBR, and animal masks make the glamour filter then you are indeed correct. FYM spent 5 hours at the Wallpaper video shoot for STUPiDFACEDD last week, which turned into an epic pre-party for a friends birthday.

Being in a music video can be full of downtime, awkwardly looking around,  trying to find someone to talk to. FYM heard the same clip of STUPiDFACEDD a good 50 times, and fortunately enough the song still sounds impressive.

Obviously putting in several hours on set, you inevitably want your shot ending up in the video. Putting a tie on your head like a headband, and rocking the fuck out, never hurts the odds to make that happen.

FYM is confident Wallpaper's new jam will be accompanied by a stellar video, premiering in early 2011. STUPiDFACEDD is out now, so listen below, make your speakers hurt, and blast this back to the futuristic, bass-heavy banger on the streets.

FYM ON THE LIST: A NIGHT OUT WITH WALLPAPER. & THE HOOD INTERNET

Ever have one of those nights when two great artists are playing in your town (at different venues) and tough decisions need to be made on which show to follow.. Well sometimes just say what the fuck (Risky Business) and choose both! Which worked out perfectly for FYM last evening. The journey started out at California Academy of Sciences with FYM spotting an albino alligator (awesome) at the entrance.

On a chilly evening around 8:15pm Ricky Reed of Wallpaper. came out dressed to the nines looking like sexual (white) chocolate grindin' in front of the perfect backdrop (the building itself) to showcase his multimedia performance (synchronized videos play as a background to each song). There obviously had to be a birthday in the crowd and Wallpaper. dedicated "It's My Birthday" to his buddy Alex.

Wallpaper. preached on that when you can't make that call, to let that special someone know that you love them, you can always "Txt Me Yr Love" as all the cell phones in the crowd immediately went up in the air. Of course Wallpaper. played their single "I Got Soul, I'm So Wasted" which made people forget they were outside at a museum courtyard watching a concert, and more like they were hookin' up in the club.

Once Wallpaper. finished their set we said goodbye to the sleeping penguins at the museum, and jumped into a car en route to Popscene for The Hood Internet! The dynamic duo that is The Hood Internet started out as an uno this evening. But then Kid Static showed up, and took over the mic to treat everyone to the new single "Chi City" that they had worked on together. Though he was in San Francisco, the crowd was more than happy to sing along to the Midwest JAM. The Chicago pride kept strong through the evening with an R. Kelly mix as well.

Some definite highlights had to be the mix of Genesis VS Justice that would make fellow mashup artist Girl Talk cry in his sleep because it's soo good. There's nothing better than catching people in the crowd visually getting stoked on a mix that blows their mind.

It's always a tough thing to be entertained when you're watching someone behind a computer but these guys bossed up. The show wasn't at a traditional music venue, this was a nightclub which was made for dance parties. The greatest thing with mashups is putting the most random artists together such at the Dizzy Rascal mix with Cyndi Lauper "Girls Just Wanna Fix Up" which had to be hilarious to name. We got our ode to Michael Jackson put together with Ratatat on "Billie Wildcat Jean".

FYM was completely spent on the evening, but being able to create your own concert by show hopping is easily one of the most fun things to do. Especially, in a town like San Francisco. Where you're always just a couple miles away from another music venue. The perfect time to do show hopping in SF is always during the Noise Pop Music Festival, so you can start training for it in the meantime. Wallpaper. is playing the Treasure Island Music Festival, that is put on by the folks of Noise Pop on October 16th. The Hood Internet just got confirmed for the Mr. Roboto Halloween Party at Mezzanine on October 30th, so start getting your costume ideas ready!

FYM TO DO: ON THE LIST IN SAN FRANCISCO USA

Tomorrow evening is going to be a great excuse to get out of the house, during this record breaking heat in SF. The Treasure Island Music Festival is getting incredibly anxious by calling this a pre-party which is still 40 days away, but FYM can't complain. The Downer Party is opening the show at 7:15 with TIMF performer Wallpaper. going on at 8:15pm.

Bay Area's own, Wallpaper has been making the rounds for quite some time and we can't ask for anything more than seeing them play at the incredible California Academy of Sciences. In the words of Rickey Redd of Wallpaper. "We can get faded, then go to the club." Check HERE for information on the party.

The pre-party at California Academy of Sciences will end in perfect time for young moderns to jump in a cab and head over to Popscene to catch Chicago's own, The Hood Internet. (we will be covering both epic events)  This duo has been on FYM's radar for many years and it's about time we get to see them live!
