FYM ON THE LIST: BUMBERSHOOT DAY THREE

The final day of Bumbershoot 2011 turned out to be our favorite of the weekend. It was a day full of local favorites, classic artists, and standout show stopping surprises. Covered below are the artists (for one reason or another) that made day three so special forYoungModerns.

My Goodness continues to be one of the most impressive up and coming bands Seattle has to offer. Monday FYM had the chance to see this fiery Capitol Hill duo rock-out Seattle Center's Exhibition Hall Stage.

Although the comparisons to The White Stripes are undeniable, who cares... Jack White has retired that moniker -My Goodness fills the void, satisfying our craving for white boy blues with a punk edge. Learn more about their music HERE.

Speaking of musicians from Detroit -Let's get funky Motown guitar Legend DENNIS COFFEY owned Monday afternoon with a lengthy set of his signature sound. Get a feel of where COFFEY is coming from below:

DFA Records -YACHT wowed FYM on day three. For us, it was the best performance we saw allll weekend! Frontwoman Claire L. Evans carries an insatiable presence on stage -paired with her male sonic cohort Jona Bechtolt (pictured below) Yatch is an unstoppable music entity live.

What separated YACHT from the rest of the 25 plus bands we saw over the three days of Bumbershoot 2011 -was their intense joy that beamed throughout the entire set.

This band plays like they mean it, and looked incredibly happy to be there on that day, which ultimately carried over into an amazing performance.



As seen above, and a testament to exactly how coool this band is -YACHT seemed unafraid to live in the moment and embrace spontaneity. In between songs the band fielded questions from the audience, and one dude asked if he could come up on stage.

YACHT appeased his request and moments later the flood gates opened with 15-20 people following suit joining the band on stage for an all out dance party version of their jam Tripped and Fell in Love. Everything worked out all the fans were very respectful of the musicians, and a beautiful moment was created! Much thanks goes out to YACHT for making our weekend!

Doug Benson brought his podcast Doug Loves Movies to all three days of Bumbershoot 2011. We were lucky enough to snag tickets early on Monday -as all three performances ended up selling out. Pictured above, Benson hands a lucky audience member a gigantic stolen jar of salsa as a prize..

The format consisted of Doug inviting his comedian friends on stage to make fun of shitty movies currently in theaters and play trivia games with his guests (it felt like a funnier version of NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me).

We thought our last show of the night would be Hall & Oates, but literally two songs into their set we realized 80's yacht rock was not in our appetite for the evening. So instead FYM went with an old standby we knew would be good. Pictured above The Reverend Horton Heat dominated as usual under the shadow of the Space Needle closing out our Monday evening. FYM ON THE LIST: THE CAPTIOL HILL BLOCK PARTY • 2011- SEATTLE WASHINGTON, USA

The 2011 Capitol Hill Block Party was a success- It was three days of great weather, spirits, culture and music in Seattle's hippest neighborhood. FYM's thoughts below on the people who made each day so special to us:

BLOCK PARTY DAY ONE: Thurston Moore hit Friday's main stage with passion and sincerity- rocking through an impressive set of his fuzzy classic sound. Moore spoke of his affection for Seattle, always supporting his music projects, and his love for Elliot Bay Book Company.

Frontman Wes Miles (pictured above) along with the rest of Ra Ra Riot's talented crew- rolled out a pleasant series of hits in front of a packed main stage crowd, proving to be a perfect soundtrack for summer. 

Along with the music, The Capitol Hill Block Party is also about supporting a great community. We had the pleasure of running into rockstar hair stylist Franz Falkowski of Emerson Salon (FYM's favorite place to get our haircut in Seattle Washington, USA).

FYM captured a beautiful moment over by The Vera Stage, as a bubble machine added to the relaxed Friday afternoon ambiance. (The Vera Project is an all ages venue, silk-screen studio, art gallery- done right, located in Seattle Center, click HERE for more details).

Seattle hip-hop guru SOL, commanded an epic- ready to party Vera crowd with an inspiring set, followed by autographs and pictures with his fans.

Even outside of the party gates, boundless musicians filled the pockets and alleyways eager to showoff their sonic prowess- The Ten Man Brass Band (pictured above) notice the girl in the lower left-hand corner quietly reading as the monumental sound fills the streets.

BLOCK PARTY DAY TWO: Above, Seattle's Michael Benjamin Lerner of Telekinesis (Merge Records), ripped through a fiery set of indie pop confection. The band also features Cody Votolato (The Blood Brothers, Jaguar Love, Head Wound City) on guitar.

Our highlight of day two was being able to see The Handsome Furs live for the first time. Dan Boeckner (pictured above) along with his wife Alexei Perry, tore through a foot-stomping collection of jams off their latest record- Sound Kapital (Sub Pop Records).

Along with the hits Boeckner also explained that the husband and wife duo road-tripped the whole way to Seattle from Montreal Canada. And propositioned the audience for any leads to finding some psychedelics (mushrooms). Dan later joked that they already had some, making their next stop in Montana assuredly a memorable one.

It's hard not to be won over by lead singer of Best Coast- Bethany Cosentino. The L.A. trio is an FYM favorite, and they didn't disappoint the animated Seattle crowd. Listen to their triumphant debut Crazy for You on Mexican Summer Records HERE.

BLOCK PARTY DAY THREE: Seattle Blues/Rock outfit My Goodness, dominated the main stage, Sunday at The Capitol Hill Block Party. Now that The White Stripes have called it quits, this guitar/drum duo is, dare we say, primed for position as a contender as the next best thing.

The Posies proved that they still play with as much heart as in the ealry 90's. These regional heroes, rocked out in front of a young crowd, laying down all of their hits to some fresh ears, with several dedications along the way. 

FYM was super stoked for a surprise guest appearance during The Posies set by Visqueen beauty- Rachel Flotard. We still can't get over how hard this Northwest favorite still rocks live!

FYM's highlight of day three was absolutely BATTLES. The New York trio truly delivered something special on the main stage Sunday afternoon. It's the destruction of standard band composition, subjugating a lead vocalist role in their band, championing video remix, and creating digital rock orchestral perfection.

John Stanier (formerly of Helmet), pictured above, is the backbone of Battles ferocious sound. He plays as Ian Williams mixes vocal stylings of digital entities projected on pixelated backgrounds.

Battles were one of the few bands to hit the main stage during the afternoon with an enteraining backgroud behind them, (plus FYM can always appreciate the use of Helvetica type used well). Learn more about their music HERE.

The Explosions in the Sky closed out Sunday evenings main stage lineup. These Texas post-rock instrumental warriors played with just as much heart as any band we saw over the past three days.

The modern day rock symphony has a new record out in 2011 called Take Care, Take Care, Take Care. Listen to their best release yet HERE.

As a whole our weekend at The Capitol Hill Block Party went exceptionally well. It's the perfect-sized event that never fails to deliver top-notch local, regional, and nationally acclaimed music to the heart of an incredible neighborhood in Seattle. FYM PREVIEW: BLACK MOUNTAIN- KEXP FREE SHOW IN SEATTLE, AUGUST 2011

Just over a month away (Friday August 19th, 2011) Vancouver B.C. buds- Black Mountain, perform live at the Mural Amphitheater at Seattle Center for FREE! The show is part of the KEXP Summer concert series. We know it's early to be talking about this, but it's not everyday forYoungModerns finds out one of our favorite bands is going to be kickin' it in our Seattle neighborhood (Queen Anne).



If you have yet to do so, check out their free-spirited, skater friendly, road rambling single, The Hair Song. FYM had the pleasure of witnessing Black Mountain and The Black Angels play together last fall at the Showbox. Stephen McBean and Amber Webber's formidable stage dynamic live is one best seen in person (pictured below).

And obviously KEXP's support of good Seattle music never fails, as they have put two impressive local bands in the line-up opening for Black Mountain on that evening (My Goodness and Whalebones). FYM hopes to catch both My Goodness and Stephen McBean's other music project Pink Mountaintops next weekend when they perform at The Capitol Hill Block Party (one of our favorite events we look forward to each year).

So mark you're calendars August 19th 2011, Black Mountain, My Goodness, and Whalebones live at Mural Ampitheatre (mural pictured above). You can count on the FYM posse being there- hanging in the grass, with our bare feet stomping on the ground. Cheers, FYM.
